Alas, at least in Asia, not so commonplace anymore, as capitalist forces have contributed to significant capital accumulation in primate cities, forcing working-age adults to migrate from their smaller villages and towns to the cities in search of employment opportunities. In Malaysia and Thailand, at least, there are entire villages populated only by the very old and the very young. Worse, as these are developing countries, there are few state-run facilities to cope with the rising burden of elderly care, because the governments kicked the can down the road assuming that the "three generation" model would hold for longer, leaving the elderly with few options except for extremely expensive, and poorly regulated, private care facilities.

"Growing old before getting rich", as it were.
