I agree completely, Sean. I think a lot of beginning writers are swayed by gurus who tell them that making money writing online is easy, normally as a lead-in to their paid writing course. Then when gurus promote this platform and that platform - Quora+ seems to be the hot one right now - these beginners think they should move to get in on the ground floor.

When you're a beginner, you're developing your product. Product development is hard enough, why complicate your life by trying to diversify your distribution as well?
