I always operate on the assumption that if I post something on the Internet, it'll end up becoming public information somehow. No matter how hard I tried to keep it private.
People have always been way too careless about their personal information. It didn't use to be this bad in the earlier days, as I think the media was a lot more careful in highlighting the dangers when being online was still not a mainstream activity.
Besides, I worked in IT long enough to know how much information leaks out. 90% of people out there are probably unaware of how to delete metadata like the EXIF data on photos. Dates, times, locations, the type of camera you use taking the shot can all be used to build up a profile of you. And, goodness me, the number of times I've seen people take photos without realising how the papers on their table, or reflections off surfaces, can reveal confidential information, like passwords.
