I did mean 40K after tax, yes. I'm assuming that an average annual household income in the US is 70K before taxes, so 40K after tax sounds about average.

I don't live in the US, though. In Malaysia, where I live, $40K after tax is an absolute fortune and would put someone easily in the top 5% of income earners.
