I don't think this is controversial, Angela. In fact, I quite agree with you on this one!
And I feel you've quite clearly articulated the reason why. With people we love - friends, family, romantic partners - we sometimes value the relationship so much, we tend to over-correct ourselves because we fear that subjecting the relationship to the "harsh truth" might damage that relationship, even though the relationship is much more resilient than that! So, far easier to tell that one "beautiful lie", and then the next, and then another, until it all escalates beyond control.
