I think dollar-cost averaging is also a useful tool for people to learn to get into the habit of investing.

If you're dependent on a monthly paycheck, and you invest a fixed proportion of your savings, you are effectively dollar-cost averaging. This should feel more manageable up front compared with making the leap to lump-sum investing.
