I think people do this because it's "easy." There's no thinking required to follow what everyone else is doing. Just execute on that well-trodden path and you will be virtually guaranteed an average result.

Going against the grain requires a lot more thought and resisting the constant gaslighting which, frankly, just makes many people not bother trying unless they've been pushed hard enough.
