I understand the idea of floating the "concede land" trial balloon. Every party wants this war to end quickly.

But giving up Donestk and Luhansk is basically giving Putin what he wanted in the first place. Then, when the inevitable protests throughout Ukraine at this shitty deal ensue, Putin would likely use the chaos to insert his agents to cause more trouble, and build up the case for his next "special military operations."
