Another problem with recycling that became big news here in Malaysia was municipal facilities in the developed countries outsourcing some of their recycling activities to private players, who would then pass on the plastic waste on to other people. At the end of the chain, they'd pay someone to ship all that plastic waste to China (or Malaysia) in the hopes that we'd deal with it! But because the quantity shipped to Malaysia was too much, it was bound to end up in a landfill.
