I suspect that RenTech's secret sauce lies in the fact that they have the right combination of intellectual and financial firepower to be able to be able to tease out the statistical relationships before most other people can.

I also suspect that the Medallion Fund is limited purely to RenTech employees because the arbitrage opportunities that it exploits are very small. The Medallion Fund probably won't be able to show the risk-adjusted returns it does if it scales up by another order or magnitude, I think.

I do like to geek out on the frontiers of finance but, unfortunately, it feels so much more limited trying to do this on the personal, non-family office scale. :)
