This is also happening a lot in Southeast Asia, to the point that I don't pick up the phone unless the call's coming from a known number. We don't have Do Not Call registries yet, so the calls came thick and fast until I started not picking up phone calls years ago.
Interestingly, one unfortunate side effect of the pandemic is that countries with "less robust legal systems" like Cambodia and Myanmar are becoming global hubs for romance and investment scammers. Scarily enough, given that the region is a global hub for human trafficking, some of the stories coming out from whistleblowers in this "industry" are horrendous, e.g. luring in young and naive Chinese speakers from Taiwan or Malaysia to supposedly high-paying jobs in Cambodia, Laos, or Myanmar, forcing them to work for scammers, administering brutal punishments if they don't comply, or selling them off to organ harvesters as a last resort.
