This is likely a cultural thing. The small town folk I've seen tend not to have longer conversations with other people they deal with - my guess is they like to keep relationships within the family and a small, closed circle. Conversely, it's the big city folk who're more open to conversing with people they don't already know.

Of course, another factor with where I'm from is, small town folk are more oriented towards "traditional" Asian cultures vs city folk with a more internationalist view. The former tend to stick to their own more.
