This is really not what I am trying to say here.

What I am trying to say is that the US - flawed though it is - is the only credible deterrent right now the world has to other powers who might have designs on other territory. Without the US, in concert with other powers, to check China's ambitions to take Taiwan, the likelihood of a full-blown invasion of Taiwan by the Chinese mainland rises exponentially.
