…rced conscription, there was nothing I could do that would allow me to return to the training room. And instead of enjoying the odd, once-in-a-lifetime, never-to-come-again experience of being a storeman in the Air Force, I wasted it away. I let the good times pass me by with impotent frustration and anger.

You could always voluntarily enlist? :)

In situations like this, I’m reminded of the aphorism “Don’t let perfect be the enemy of the good.” Sure, it wasn’t the perfect situation to be in. But you might as well have made the most out of it.
